Celebrating One Year with Substack!
& a small gift designed especially for you—

Dear Friends,
essays from the edge of town is one year old!
The authors on Substack I’ve read and “met” care about each other, and their readers. I comment and they write back. Everyone does! What a great community and such creative, smart, and lovely beings you are!
Much writing! Much reading! I’ve connected with you! You are here! I found Kim Roberts! I found Joanna Rotkin(and Jo!) I found my cousin, Susan Kacvinsky here! I found my dear friend Gay! And my teacher Angie! I found my 4th grade classmates Alison and Dan! Everybody of Kim’s Awareness Through Movement Class I take became a paid subscriber! People signed up! Students! My brother, Rog has helped me get here—and with his magnificent photos! And you, who are new to me! (Forgive me if I haven’t mentioned you—).
Thank you!
At first I confused my friend K, with Robert Reich. I wondered, Why did Robert Reich sign up for my substack? And then I wrote a (very subtle) semi-political piece (the one about the sacred egg)—influenced by him a tiny bit. Then I realized, K had re-stacked his post. Aha! That’s how I learned what re-stacking and notes are.
I have a financial goal for this newsletter (as I gently expressed in my first letter to you). If you would like to contribute to my substack this would be a good time (a birthday!) Did you know you can subscribe for one month only? It’s six dollars. Unsubscribing is easy on this platform. Click and you’re done.
If you are already a paid subscriber I am so grateful!
~ This next year I’ll be switching to an essay every-other week. More about that in the next newsletter.
I’m still learning how this machine turns its wheels. Sara Fay has been a wonderful guide—I’ll tell you. If you’re new to Substack go to her (substack) doorstep immediately!
Thank you for reading, signing up, and for your care, thoughtful conversation, and enthusiasm.

Here’s the gift—Maybe next time it’ll be for paid subscribers only but now it’s for all subscribers. In the spirit of the lunar magical red eclipse.
***THIS offering takes place during the entire month of MARCH only.***
HERE IT IS:
from the edge: Perhaps there is a moment in your day that needs something of meaning, a gap moment that asks for a small ritual. A pause in the day. A simple action you can repeat that finds depth, connection, comfort. A moment to imagine, dream, rest. A creative gesture.
Write me a letter about this in-between moment and I’ll write you back with a tiny ritual, writing, or movement prompt. I offer you a diving board (or a wading pool). Substack has been that for me.
DETAILS:
1. Write me a note, letter, or postcard postdated IN THE MONTH OF MARCH describing your in-between situation.
Examples: I am beginning a new business and... I just quit my job and... There is a moment when I leave the world and enter my garden gate… Ten minutes before sleep I could use a… I would like a small shift in my awareness when I return home, I’m overwhelmed with—
The more you can tell me about this particular time of between here and here, the better!
2. Tell me, would you like: a movement score, or stillness ritual,or writing prompt, or a single yoga position?
3. Address it with my address and your return address. Drop it in the mail box.
(Hint. My Bross street mailing address is at the bottom of this newsletter.)
You’ll Receive:
1. A handwritten letter back with instructions for your simple ritual included.
2. I’ll offer you a movement score or stillness ritual, or a writing prompt, or a single yoga position based on your particular conditions. Would you like something for on your way to work? A project that’s beginning, entering your house, your sleep. A little form to dream about the next thing…? A sort of clearing?
We’ll keep it simple and easy.
you’re welcome. my pleasure.

Thanks for reading. Some of you have been reading these newsletters and essays for over ten years, from email to mail-chimp to substack. For you it may not matter what platform it’s on. I appreciate you.
Looking forward to next time.
Love,
xoxo,
~ Katharine
PS. Almost every time I write “platform” I think of a diving board. And then I think of a loading dock. And then I think of a dock, and small boats, with oars at the dock, and then I think of you.
